Appliance care tips

October 29, 2009

If you went to the trouble of saving money for expensive appliances you should work to take care of them so they last as long as possible. Neglect is dangerous and will make your appliances conk out a lot more quickly. Here are some quick tips.

1. Clean out the soapy buildup in your washing machine by running an empty cycle with just hot water and vinegar. No detergent. The vinegar could damage the machine in large amounts due to the acidity, but small amounts and relatively infrequent use should do more good than harm.

2. For your clothes dryer, you should keep the lint screen cleaned out. It’s a fire hazard to have that much lint in there and it causes the machine to work harder than necessary which also wastes energy. You should even go so far as to wipe the screen with soap and water every couple of weeks. Bet you didn’t know that.

3. If you have a clothes iron instead of a garment steamer be sure you are only running clean water through it (same rule for garment steamers, too). Use distilled water if possible and drain out the excess water after each use. If you happen to scratch the iron plate be careful. It will damage (snag) your clothes and cause tears. You can sand down the plate with sandpaper. Use extra fine grade. If the scratches are too bad you’ll have to get a new iron, though.

Do your best to take care of what you have and keep it clean and running smoothly. Get appliance checkups occasionally to be sure everything is alright and replace any worn parts to stay ahead of disaster.
