Bamboo Flooring Durability-More Durable Than You Might Think

February 8, 2010

Bamboo flooring has become very popular in the past few years. With a remarkable beauty and eco-friendly credentials it no wonder it is so popular. Bamboo flooring hardness is a question for many people when they are thinking about this type of flooring.

Since bamboo is actually a grass and not a hardwood its right sometimes to assume that it is a much softer material. Fortunately it’s not as much a concern now with modern techniques and materials. However, there are differences in types of bamboo flooring that you should be aware of.

Stranded and solid bamboo flooring are harvested in manufactured very similarly. For more traditional Asian look solid is your best bet is you can show the knuckles were nodules within the bamboo shoot. Although it has a woven mat appearance it is still beautiful and has its own place in your home or office. Both are beautiful in their own right and are fairly durable as well.

The type that you should be aware of are carbonized bamboo floors. Cut and processed much like its counterparts it also goes through a process that darkens the material. Although it is a beautiful material it also softens it. It is said that carbonized flooring can be as much as 30% softer than its more solid counterparts.

When compared to traditional hardwood flooring these floors are softer but have uniqueness that’s all their own. Fortunately durability is not near as much as a concern with modern processes that they go through. Just like hardwood flooring you should use rugs and areas that will have a lot of traffic. Be sure not to drag furniture across as you can scratch up and blemish your flooring. With some basic precautions you enjoy your bamboo floor for many many years to come.
